Derrel Phillip Williams (Dah_Kah_Yay) 40 yrs. old went to be with our heavenly father on Sept. 11, 2018.
Derrel was born on July 28, 1978 at the Lawton Indian Hospital to the late Derrel Phillip Williams Sr. and Johnita Lee Haumpy.
Derrell attended the Victory Christian School in Alfala, OK and was a graduate of Carnegie High School and later attended USAO enrolled in the Kiowa Clemente Class. Derrell learned Braille and combined his gift for computers with reading, writing and electronics. Derrel lost his vision at the age of 16 and was a panel speaker representing the Midwestern states of the US, at the public forum on Technology Initiatives at the National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Public Meeting. Derrel worked at the Out Reach program of Anadarko and volunteered at Carnegie Elderly Nutrition Center.Derrel was an avid football enthusiast and a lifelong OSU (Cowboys) fan and looked forward to the Bedlam game every year. Derrel loved basketball could tell you everything about the Carnegie Wildcats.
Derrel was a proud enrolled member of the Apache and Kiowa tribes and loved to attend the Apache Blackfoot society events. Derrel read any and all things Native American. He was his grandfathers’ sidekick singing Kiowa hymns.
Derrel loved going to powwows, teasing and especially joking with his niece Ashley Daughn and was a dedicated active Republican voter.
Derrel applied for and was approved for Hobbs, a combination service dog through Paws With A Cause, a national nonprofit agency that trains dogs for people with disability. Derrel and his dog worked as a team because of Derrel’s sight loss. Each dog is trained to meet the needs of the individual. Derrel and Hobbs have the distinction of being one of the few cross trained guide dog/service dog team that was certified nationally. This successful initiative was the 1st in Oklahoma and 3rd in the United States.
Derrel was a Christian and member of the Cedar Creek United Methodist Church. Everyone who met Derrel loved him. Derrel was an inspiration to others. People were naturally drawn to Derrel. Despite his circumstances, Derrel would find laughter and strength, even the face of overwhelming situations and no one loved their family more than Derrel and vice-versa. Derrel’s biggest dream was to be healed.
His maternal grandparents were John Saye Haumpy and Venice Merlene Bointy Haumpy, and his paternal grandparents were Deloran Williams and Mary Archilta Pace Tsahtahsisko.
He leaves to cherish his memories his mother Johnita Williams of Carnegie, brother John-Michael Williams of Carnegie, nephew Isaac Jacob Williams of Canute, Uncle Stephan & Brenda Haumpy Tulsa, Aunt Amber & Chris Chalepah Carnegie, Cousin Ashley Tsonetokoy OKC, Aunt Laquinta & Richard Holcomb Apache, Aunt Teresa & Darrell Keith Simmons Elgin, Uncle Dewayne Williams Sterling, Ill., Grandmother Sandra Archilta Marroquin Apache, Special Aunt Yolanda Reyna OKC, Special friend Brian Tobian OKC, and a host of cousins and friends.

I have so many beautiful memories of this incredible young man who always has a smile & a great sense of humor. A man who knew no limitations & lived life to the fullest. I remember when he walked down the isle at kindergarten graduation. I remember him rising to sit up on the arm of his wheelchair during the national anthem or pledge of allegiance. My mother always recalled him abandoning his chair to chase his friends down a flight of stairs, then waiting patiently for someone to retrieve his wheels. He knew no boundaries. Kristen enjoyed many trips to special Olympics as his guest.
I know there is a hole in your heart, Johnita. God blessed your with one of his most precious children because he knew you were special enough to rise to the challenge. Well done Thy good and faithful servant.
My heartfelt love & prayers for your family as you mourn your loss, but rejoice in Derrels everlasting healing.

Derrel was a classmate and friend. I really got to know Derrel best when I had the opportunity to work with him in Mrs. Leitner’s classroom during our Junior High/High School Years. We had the opportunity to learn some Braille together! Derrel was an inspiration always searching for the positive in every situation and holding others accountable to do the same. My prayers are with his sweet Mom and family during this time. He will be missed!

I look forward to the time when Our Creator will fulfill his promise found in the bible at Isaiah chap 33 verse 24, where he promises an end to all "Sickness". Also at Isaiah chap 28 verses 8 he promises to eliminate death as well. These promises and many more he will do when his Kingdom rules this earth. So until then pray for Gods Kingdom to come. I'll pray for your family.

Johnita & Family, I always enjoyed caring for Derrel, he could always find a bright side to everything.. he was such a joy to care for! I recall many visits to the ER & in a tense moment, although he was uncomfortable he could say something so very funny and positive! Much like John & Merlene, he was a joy to be around! Prayers for your peace and comfort... God is a healer of the spirit, body & mind... He will comfort you!

Johnita, My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.  I remember how you used to tell me, a fellow OSU fan, about your son's love of the Cowboys and I know from others how devoted you were to him.  God be with you as you travel this difficult path and may your wonderful memories of Darrel shine through the darkness of this time.
