Wilma Jean (Tinsley) Burkhalter
Jean (Tinsley) Burkhalter, long-time Mangum resident, passed away on June 26, 2026 at the age of 90. She was born in Muleshoe, Texas to Joseph Lee and Helen Leona (Blanscet) Tinsley on June 18,1936.
When Jean was six months old, the family moved back to Mangum. She was the middle girl of five girls. All five sisters played basketball while in school at Mangum. While in high school, Jean worked at Mildred's Flower Shop and at the soda fountain in Richard's Drug Store. Jean slept in the same bed as her grandmother who lived with them. She said it was just like the TV show, The Waltons. She was saved as a young girl while attending Vacation Bible School at Epworth Methodist Church in Mangum.
Jean graduated from Mangum High School in May 1954. She and Kenneth Burkhalter were married on July 11, 1954, in the home of her parents.
They lived in Lake Creek and Granite, and then moved to Mangum in 1963 when Kenneth became a State Farm insurance agent. Jean worked in the office with him for over 30 years.
They were members of Trinity Baptist Church, and later Abundant Life Baptist Church. Jean taught 2 and 3 year old's in Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, and helped out in the nursery.
She helped prepare and serve many meals for funerals and church dinners.
Jean loved flowers and enjoyed working in her flowerbeds. She loved making floral
arrangements and made the bouquets and corsages for the weddings of both her daughters.
She loved decorating the house for Christmas, and had home-quilted bedspreads on each bed in the house.
Jean was a wonderful cook and her favorite times were when she could have all of her family together, seated around her table.
She and Kenneth loved the days the school bus brought the three little great-grandkids to their house after school.
Jean was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was a beloved sister and aunt, and a precious friend to many.
