Jean (Tinsley) Burkhalter long-time Mangum, passed away on June 26, 2026 at the age of 90.
She was born in Muleshoe, Texas to Joseph Lee and Helen Leona (Blanscet) Tinsley on June 18, 1936. When Jean was six months old, the family moved back to Mangum. She was the middle girl of 5 girls. All five sisters played basketball while in school in Mangum. They also had a grandmother living in the home and Jean slept with her. She said it was just like the Waltons.
She was saved as a young girl while attending Vacation Bible School at Epworth Methodist Church in Mangum.
While in highschool, she worked at Mildred's Flower Shop and Richard's Drug
Soda Fountain.
She graduated from Mangum High School in May, 1954. She and Kenneth Burkhalter were married on July 11, 1954, in the home of her parents.
They lived in Lake Creek and then Granite. In 1963, they moved to Mangum where Kenneth became a State Farm Insurance agent and Jean worked with him for over 30 years in his office.
They were members of Trinity Baptist Church and later, Abundant Life Baptist Church. Jean taught 2 & 3 year olds in Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, and helped out in the nursery. She helped prepare and serve many meals for funerals and church dinners.
Jean was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
She and Kenneth enjoyed the days the school bus brought the 3 little great-grandkids to their house after school.
She was a beloved sister and aunt, and a precious friend to many.
Jean loved flowers, and working in her flowerbeds. She loved making floral arrangements for the alter table at church, and she made all the bouquets and corsages for her daughters' weddings.
She loved quilting and crafting. She and her friend, Mrytie Sullivan, used to say that whoever dies with the most fabric wins.
She loved decorating the house for Christmas, and had a home-quilted
bedspread on each bed in the house.
Jean was a wonderful cook, and her favorite times were when she could have all of her family together, seated around her table.
Preceding her in death were her parents Lee and Helen Tinsley
