Ward Harlan Black

November 7, 1941 — September 23, 2024

Life-long Sentinel resident Ward Harlan Black passed away Monday afternoon September 23, 2024 at Comanche County Hospital in Lawton. Born to parents Clyde and Lois Black at the McMurry-Stowers hospital in Sentinel on November 7, 1941. He graduated Sentinel High School in 1959 and lived his entire life in Sentinel. He joined the Army reserves in 1964 in Fort Polk, Louisiana and honorably retired as a Sergeant Major in November 2001. He was a long-time volunteer firefighter. Harlan worked for several area farmers over the years, he worked for the Sentinel Leader and always mentioned them sending him to several Dale Carnegie Training Classes. He enjoyed selling truck accessories for Berlin Barnes in Hobart, and he was a chemist for Halliburton. He then began a career with the Oklahoma Department of Corrections as a guard at the Granite Reformatory then retiring from the Department of Corrections Work Release Center in Hobart. He was the recipient of the Department of Corrections Superior Officer of the year in 1998. He was also a 50 year member of the Masonic Lodge. He was especially fond of his domino buddies and he looked forward each day to seeing his friends of the Southside BS Club where they tried to solve all the world's problems.

To cherish his memory are daughter Dalinda Penner, son in law Jeff. Grandchildren Nick, Lauren and Dayton, his wife Katelynn. Great granddaughter Lillian and his nephew Paul McMillan and wife Paula. Along with a host of many, many old and dear friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents and sister.
