Roy Donald Boatright

Roy Donald "Boaty" Boatright Jr., 87, of Lago Vista, Texas, passed away peacefully on July 12, 2026, following a brief illness.

Boaty was born on June 27, 1939, in Cordell, Oklahoma, to Roy Donald Boatright Sr. and Edith Smith Boatright. In the early 1940s, his family relocated to Plainview, Texas, where he spent his childhood and formative years.

A proud graduate of Plainview High School, Boaty was an enthusiastic athlete whose love of basketball earned him the distinguished honor of being named "Bulldog of the Year." Following high school, he attended West Texas State University before answering the call to serve his country in the United States Army. During his military service, he was stationed in Germany, an experience that broadened his horizons and left him with many memorable stories.

After returning home, Boaty met the love of his life, Carolyn, and the two were married, beginning a lifelong partnership centered on family, hard work, and devotion. He embarked on a successful career in finance with Allied Finance, later NationsBank, where he spent his entire professional career. His work brought him to Austin, Texas, in the early 1970's where he built a respected career spanning decades. Through dedication, leadership, and integrity, he rose to become a Regional Manager overseeing operations throughout the state of Texas before his retirement.

In 1994, Boaty and Carolyn made Lago Vista their home. There, he fully embraced the lifestyle he loved most, surrounded by the beauty of the Texas Hill Country. He found joy in the outdoors, especially boating on the water and caring for the herd of deer that regularly visited just outside his front door.

Boaty will be remembered for his warm personality, unforgettable storytelling, and quick wit. He had a remarkable ability to make people laugh and feel welcome, and his tales, whether humorous, heartfelt, or adventurous, were often the highlight of family gatherings. His kindness, humor, and steady presence will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Carolyn Boatright, and his son, Matthew Bailes.

He is survived by his daughters, Julie Bailes Philpot and husband Frank Allen Philpot, and Melissa Boatright Rye and husband Stephen Rye; his grandchildren, Michael Bailes and fiancée Mariah Long, Ellen Bailes, and Elizabeth Philpot; his great-grandchild, Matthew Bailes; and numerous extended family members and friends who will cherish his memory.

In lieu of flowers, the family encourages friends and loved ones to honor Boaty's memory by spending time outdoors, sharing a good story, and enjoying the company of family and friends, just as he always did.
