Margaret Jean Stone

January 4, 1937 — April 18, 2026

Margaret Jean "Peggy" (Gunn) Stone, 89, died April 18, 2026, in Chickasha, OK.

She was born January 4, 1937, in Kilgore, Texas, to Leslie and Ruby Gunn. The family moved to Gilmer, Texas; Corpus Christi, Texas; Oklahoma City; Houston, Texas; Oklahoma City; and Midwest City. During World War II, Peggy's father worked on U.S. Navy bases and at Tinker Air Force Base. When they moved back to Oklahoma City after living in Houston, he began working with deaf people as a missionary with the Southern Baptist Home Mission Board (now the North American Mission Board).

Peggy graduated from Midwest City High School in 1955 and from Oklahoma Baptist University in 1959 with a bachelor's degree in elementary education.

She married Delmer Durwood "Jack" Stone on Aug. 14, 1959, at First Baptist Church, Oklahoma City. They lived for three years in Anadarko, where he worked at the Anadarko Daily News, and she taught junior high science, English, reading and Spanish. They then moved to Tulsa, where he worked for the Tulsa Tribune, but they stayed for less than a year before moving back to Anadarko in 1962.

Their first child, Jeffrey Douglas, was born in 1962. He was followed by Gregory Alan in 1966 and Laura Anne in 1968.

Peggy returned to teaching in 1974 and taught English and reading at West Elementary in Anadarko. She also returned to school and earned a master's degree in education with a specialization in library media from Southwestern Oklahoma State University in Weatherford. She became the Anadarko Middle School librarian in 1981. She retired in 1996 but returned later for a brief part-time stint as librarian.

She was an active member of First Baptist Church of Anadarko, where she worked in the nursery and taught Sunday school and Vacation Bible School.

She was also active in the community as a member of the Better Homemakers OHCE group, in which she served in all offices; the Anadarko Garden Club; the Philomathic; and the teachers sorority Kappa Kappa Iota.

Peggy supported her children in all their activities, attending many football games, wrestling matches, cross-country meets, track meets and piano recitals over the years. She served as a Cub Scout den leader and a Campfire Girls leader, teaching her children the value of volunteer work and instilling in them a sense of duty to the community.

She was predeceased by her parents, Leslie and Ruby Gunn; her husband, Jack Stone, who died July 16, 2011; and her brother, Wade Gunn.

Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Jeff and Debbie Stone and Greg and Teresa Stone, all of Anadarko; one daughter and son-in-law, Laura and Scott Wilson, Stillwater; four granddaughters and a grandson-in-law, Jessie and Jackie Stone, both of Anadarko, and Kiersten Stone, Moore, and Jordan and Andy Tait, Anadarko; one grandson, Sam Wilson, Stillwater; one sister and brother-in-law, Ann and Bob Evans, Anadarko; one sister-in-law, Sharon Gunn, Jones; and many nieces, nephews and friends.
