Laverne Lundy, age 100, of Cordell, Oklahoma, went home to her Lord on Saturday, May 30, 2026.
Laverne was born in 1926 in Oklahoma, to Lee and Thelma Chambers. In 1929, the Chambers family moved to Washita County, where Laverne would put down the deep roots that anchored her for the next ninety-seven years. She attended local country schools as her family settled in Washita County.
Faith was the steady thread running through every chapter of Laverne's life. She was a faithful member of Sunnyside Baptist Church in Dill City until the congregation was disbanded, after which she joined Calvary Baptist Church in Cordell. Calvary became her church home for the remainder of her life - through marriages and births, through losses and joys, through every quiet ordinary Sunday in between. The church loved her as deeply as she loved it.
Laverne first married Harlin Dawson in 1945. To that union one son, Larry, was born before the marriage ended. In 1949, she married Ben Holman, and together they built a busy and joyful household with three more children - Randall (Randy), Scott, and Brenda. That season of her life was cut short when Ben passed away in 1961, leaving Laverne a widow with four young children to raise.
What followed was a quiet act of courage that defined the rest of her life. Laverne enrolled in cosmetology school and built a thirty-five-year career as a hairdresser. For three generations of women in Cordell and the surrounding communities, her hands were a familiar comfort and her chair a place of conversation, kindness, and laughter. She did the hard work of providing for her family with grace, never losing her gentle way or her quiet faith.
In 1970, Laverne married Loyd Lundy, who brought five sons of his own into the family. Laverne welcomed each of them as her own, and together she and Loyd shared seventeen years of marriage before his passing in 1987.
Above all, Laverne loved her family. She was a mother, stepmother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother, and she carried each title with grace and joy. She had a soft laugh, an open door, and a way of making every grandchild feel like the favorite. Her home was a place where everyone was fed, welcomed, and loved.
She lived a life of one hundred years, and she filled every one of them with faith, work, and family.

Laverne is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, Larry Dawson and his wife Jeri; Randy Holman and his wife Gretchen; and Scott Holman and his wife Lisa. She leaves behind twelve grandchildren, along with a multitude of great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren, and a host of extended family, friends, and church family who loved her dearly.
