Leota Jean Davis Miller was born August 11, 1933, near Kingsdown, Kansas, to Troy and Mina Davis. She shared many happy days with her three sisters. She met the love of her life, Alfred, on a blind date, and they married in Kingsdown before moving to San Antonio, Texas, where Alfred was stationed at Ft. Sam Houston. During that time, their son Rodney was born. After Alfred's discharge, they moved all of their belongings (in two trips in the back of a car) to the farm east of Cordell, Oklahoma. Jean was baptized soon after their move. Not long after settling on the farm, their daughter Rebecca was born. They celebrated 72 years of marriage.
Jean was a devoted farm wife who worked hard alongside Alfred. She helped on the farm driving the tractor and truck, and she grew a large vegetable and flower garden, preserving what they grew through canning. Jean also worked outside the home. She first worked for Dr. Livingston, a general practitioner in Cordell, where she made many friends during her 11 years there. From there, she went on to work at Farmer National Bank for 10 years before retiring.
Jean loved to cook. She and Alfred were part of the catering committee at their church, preparing meals for Wednesday night kids' programs, sometimes serving more than 60 meals in a single evening. Her love of cooking was very evident in her massive collection of cookbooks and clipped, saved, and borrowed recipes. She was also active in her church, where she was part of the sewing circle at Bible MB Church. There, she learned to quilt and created many beautiful pieces of art.
During retirement, Jean volunteered at the Etc. Shop. She and Alfred cherished when their granddaughters were growing up, spending many hours outside under the shade tree, hosting tea parties. Jean loved to travel and went on many spirited adventures to Washington, D.C., Hawaii, Florida, Germany, and Alaska. One of her favorite trips was to Disney with her granddaughters, sister, and daughter.
Jean's most special hobby was shopping. Her most often spoken phrase was, "I haven't got no new clothes." She could out-shop the best, most seasoned shoppers, always looking forward to her next outing.
Jean was preceded in death by her parents, Troy and Mina Davis; her sister, Doris Lubbers; and her son, Rodney Miller.
She is survived by her husband, Alfred Miller; her daughter, Rebecca Miller; granddaughters, Stephany Coursey Kirk and husband Byron Kirk, and Sandra Coursey; grandson, Jason Coursey and wife Jill; sisters, LaVonne Ellis and Lola Mae Shea; one great-grandson; and numerous nieces and nephews.
