Jerry Ray Luttrell was born on January 28, 1951, in Norman, Oklahoma, to Ray Leo Luttrell and Mary Kathryn Brockhaus. He grew up in Anadarko, where he attended school from 1st through 12th grade. From the start, everyone knew Jerry was smart-the kind of student who made the Honor Roll and Honor Society look easy.
Jerry learned the value of hard work early. He started working at his dad's filling station at age 12, then at Leach's Market, and later at Humpty Supermarket while he was still a teen. He saved up enough to buy his first car at 16 - a light green, six-cylinder Plymouth 3-speed that he proudly called his "freedom."
He graduated from Anadarko High School in 1969 with honors (despite being so sick that classmates were taking bets on whether he'd make it through the ceremony!). After high school, Jerry received a scholarship to Southwestern State College, starting out as a pre-dentistry major. But after some health challenges, he switched to pharmacy - a move that turned out to be his true calling.
In 1971, he married his high school sweetheart and lifelong love, Karen Sue Phelps. The two built a beautiful life together, full of love, laughter, and the occasional fishing trip or hunting adventure. Jerry graduated from Southwestern Oklahoma State University with his Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy in 1975, and years later received his Doctorate of Pharmacy in 2001.
Jerry's career in pharmacy spanned over four decades. He worked at Humpty Pharmacy, Love County Medical Center in Marietta, Walmart, Homeland (his "best job ever"), Eckerd/CVS, Walgreens, and even as a consultant pharmacist for Anadarko Hospital. He was known for his caring heart - not just to his patients, but to anyone who needed a hand. More than once, he quietly paid for someone's prescription out of his own pocket.
Outside of work, Jerry was deeply involved in his community. During the 1970s, he served in Civil Defense and the auxiliary police force in Anadarko, Marietta, and Apache - helping with storm watches, pulling folks out of ditches during blizzards, and lending a hand wherever needed. He helped the Anadarko PD during the Indian Expo for several years and was always the first to show up when someone needed help.
Jerry wasn't much for TV or sports - he preferred good books, good stories, and good company. After retiring in 2018, he cherished the peace and quiet, spending time with his family (especially his five grandkids!) and swapping stories about the "good old days."
Jerry always said, "When I die, just cremate me, put me in a coffee can, and stick me in a post hole." Well, we're doing a little better than that, Jerry.
He leaves behind a legacy of kindness, laughter, and love. Family was everything to him - he was the caretaker, the advocate, the one everyone turned to. The house was always open, and you could count on being greeted with an arm around your shoulder and a "Come on in here!"
Jerry was preceded in death by his parents, Ray Leo and Mary Kathryn Luttrell; in-laws Charles and Ellen Phelps; sister-in-law Carletta Miller; and niece Christey Miller.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Karen, of the home; daughter Jennifer (Brandon) McEachern, with grandchildren Colton and Jackson of Piedmont; son Jeremy (Tonya) Luttrell, with grandchildren Isabella, Alexander, and Gabriel of Bixby; sister Patricia (Allan) Leatherbury of Cyril and their family; brother David Luttrell and his children and grandchildren; brothers-in-law Charles (Chuck) Phelps Jr and wife Trenda and family and Lennis Miller and family; along with many extended family members
