James 'Jackie' Dean Hunter
The funeral for Jackie Hunter, 80, from Anadarko, Oklahoma will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 15, 2024, at Ware's Chapel United Methodist Church with the Rev. Michael Boyiddle officiating, and Rev. Andrew Sonny Ware assisting. Devotional will be given by Terry Ware. Pallbearers are Jackie's nephews, Lance and Lehman Ware Jr, Jeremy, Shane, Brock, Charley, Rush and Joseph Hunter. Honorary pallbearers are Jackie's cousins, Jerry Paukune and Tommy Botone, nephews Lyndrith Hooter Ware, Jeffrey, Dickie Joe, Lil Bill and TJ Hunter. A meal to follow for family and friends will be served immediately after the services at Ware's Chapel.
Public viewing will be held on Tuesday, May 14, 2024, at Ray and Martha's Funeral Home in Anadarko.
Jackie died Saturday, May 4, 2024, at the Lawton Veterans Center following complications from a lengthy illness. He was born Aug 15, 1943, at the Lawton Indian Hospital, grew up and attended St. Patrick's Catholic Mission in Anadarko and graduated from Anadarko High School in 1962. He attended Cameron University in Lawton, majoring in Culinary Arts.
Jackie served as a corporal platoon leader in the United States Marine Corps in Vietnam, for four years from 1964 to 1968 as an M-60 machine gunner, and specialized in mapping, guerrilla and land mine warfare. His decorations include Good Conduct, National Defense Service, Vietnam Campaign Medal with one star; also the Vietnam Campaign Medal with Device awarded by South Vietnam. Jackie was featured in Life magazine during this time with the Marines in Vietnam.
Jackie especially valued Kiowa language, traditions and songs, and he was a member of Ton Kon Gau (Black Leggings Warrior Society). He was a direct descendant of Chief Doha, Chief Guisabin (Wolf Quiver), Sun Dance leader AnSoTy (Long Foot) and Koitsenko Warrior Society member HawnGooPah (Never Got Shot). Jackie had a lengthy career as a truck driver, working for companies including Western Electric, based out of Oklahoma City where he resided, and he was also an accomplished billiards player. Jackie created a hot chow chow which family and friends loved. Campbell Soups offered to buy the recipe, but Jackie refused.
Jackie was predeceased by: his father, Richard M. Hunter Sr. and mother Iva Rose Taylor Hawzipta-Hunter; his wife, Lois Snake; his siblings, Carol Jean Ware and Richard "Dickie" Hunter of Anadarko, Dennis Hunter (US Army Vietnam War) of Pawnee, Leon "Porky" Hunter (US Marine Corps Vietnam War) of Anadarko, Michael Hunter (US Navy Vietnam era and US Naval Reserves Desert Storm) of Edmond, and Teresa Hunter of Anadarko. Jackie is survived by: aunt Mattie Botone of Anadarko, grand-daughters Moriah Autumn and Maddison Taylor Bearshield; son, Jackie Hunter Jr, all of Lawton; his former companion, Carmen Cabanas of Oklahoma City; siblings, Terry Hunter and spouse Sharon Hunter, Judith Hunter-Ware and spouse Terry Ware, all of Anadarko, Karla Forbes of Semmes, Alabama, Gayla Ahtone of Ardmore, Robert Alexander of Burns Flat and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
The family wishes to acknowledge the loving care and assistance provided by Jackie's sister in-law, Carolyn Hunter, Jackie's long-time friend, Judy Guoladdle, the Clinton Veterans Center and Comanche County Memorial Hospital staff, especially RN Constantino and Nurse's Aid, Brandi Armstrong.
