Alvin often referred to preaching as "breaking bread for hungry people flavored with enough salt to make them thirsty for more." Alvin attended Southwestern Oklahoma State University, where he met Sue Ann Cecil. They were married September 2, 1962.

After graduation from SWOSU, they moved to Ft. Worth, TX, to study at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. Their first son, Wesley, was born in Ft. Worth. They were later blessed with a daughter, Dena, a son, Travis, and another son, Nathan.

Alvin pastored several different churches in Oklahoma & Colorado. He began preaching at the Indian Mission in Geary, OK, while in college. He loved the old hymns, the book of Isaiah, and considered himself abundantly blessed.
