Jackie Lynn West Russell passed away on June 8, 2019 at her family home in Hobart, OK. She bravely and gracefully fought against her diagnoses of Alzheimer’s Disease.
Jackie was born on January 25, 1954 to Jack O. West and Mary Imogene Gilmore West in Oklahoma City. She graduated from Putnam City High School in 1972. A classically trained dancer for most of her youth, she chose to attend Oklahoma State University and was a member of the Delta Delta Delta Sorority. After graduating with her degree in Elementary Education, she began her career as a teacher in the Putnam City School District.
On November 14, 1977, Jackie was set up on a blind date with the tallest man her friend could find. Thankfully, dinner went well and on March 15, 1980, Jackie and lawyer Norman L. Russell were wed in the Angie Smith Chapel of Oklahoma City University, the groom’s Alma Mater. The young couple traveled to Hawaii, Mexico, Canada and soon began their family with daughter Audrey, son Cole, and daughter Victoria.
As a young mother, Jackie successfully completed a Masters of Education graduate degree from the University of Central Oklahoma. She annually took leadership roles in her church’s vacation bible school and encouraged her distinct children’s talents and interests. She loved beagle dogs, her monthly bunko card club, was a skilled downhill skier, tailgated Oklahoma State Football games, and was known in several counties for her [classified] chocolate chip cookie recipe.

When spouse Norman was appointed Associate District Judge of Kiowa County, Jackie accepted a position as a middle school math teacher in Altus, OK. In Altus, she would be recognized as Teacher of the Year three separate years. As a teacher and a mother, she was known for her compassionate heart, high standards of personal betterment and sharp sense of humor. Despite the commute, she was dedicated to her coworkers and the military-family student body of the Altus School District, and mentored a series of student teachers.
Jackie is survived by her husband, the Honorable Norman L. Russell (retired), her children Audrey, Cole, and Victoria; son-in-law Nathan Lunsford; Grandchildren Hazel Kate, Lydia Rose, and Jett Russell; sister Sherry Tabor and family… and three decades of Oklahoma Students.

I could not believe this when I heard it. She was a wonderful person, mother, and teacher. Without her urging me to do so, I would never have come to Putnam City. She has left this earth way to soon. I am so, so sorry, Norm. Prayers and hugs.

Norm -
Since I was a little girl, I thought Jackie was so amazing and such a beautiful woman inside and out.  Style, grace, charisma...she had it all.  I loved it when you and she would come visit mom and dad...or when we would run into you at Stillwater! I know she and mom will have a blast talking and laughing together—and feeling no pain.  My heart goes out to you.  We love you and your family and feel your great loss.

Norm and family,
I am so shocked and heartbroken to hear about Jackie's passing.  She was such a sweet, thoughtful and beautiful lady and I was blessed to have known her and to have her as a friend when I lived in Hobart.  I have such fond memories of her and admired her so very much.  I pray for God's peace and comfort to you all in the days ahead.  I know she heard those words, "Well done good and faithful servant" when she walked through those heavenly gates into the arms of her savior.  God bless you and your family.

Norm and family,
You know how special Jackie is and was to the group, but her friendship was a blessing to me that I will treasure forever.  She was your soul mate Norm and her children were the joy in her life.  Her eyes twinkled when she talked about her grandchildren.  She truly was a talented, gracious and wonderful friend.  Praying for comfort and peace for all of you.  She has left a great legacy.  This Bible verse reminds me of the kind of woman, wife and mother Jackie was.  Proverbs 3:15-18 We are blessed to have known her!

I knew her first as a sister in Delta Delta Delta.  She was a role model in so many ways.  I admired her wit and wisdom.  She was beautiful, purposeful and kind me as a younger Tri-Delta at OSU.  Then she came to be my child's teacher at Hefner Middle School.  She was the same, timeless, and so so good at teaching.  The kind of teacher you want to take with you throughout your child's education.  Generations of students have been blessed.  My life has been encouraged by knowing her and I am grateful.... we will have our reunion one day! Prayers for your family and loved ones.

Norm no words that I can say that will ease the pain in your heart.  Just know a lot of your friends are praying for you to have the strength to be strong on the hard road ahead. Remember the good times and the many years that you were able to share with Jackie.  Someday you will look at pictures and remember things you were able to do together and then you will have a smile on your face. It is hard to let go but in time you will heal a little each day.

My heart is breaking for Norm, Cole, and the girls.  We knew Jackie as a Boy Scout mom in OKC while Norm was the scout leader.  She was always ready to help the boys and was always teaching, including 'no double dipping' with the potato chips.
We all loved Mrs. Russell, she was one of a kind.  She and Norm helped train a second Eagle Scout in our family and probably many more.  God bless you.
